From www.international.apha.com Written by: Irene Stamatelakys August 30, 2010 Kreuth,Germany. In Monday’s Novice Amateur reining class at the European Paint Horse Championships, Sharon Hooijkaas captured the audience’s eye as soon as she stepped into the arena with Commander Riminic. The 19-year-old from Almeer, the Netherlands, was competing at her first major event with the flashy bay tobiano stallion. The duo not only looked good, but quickly proved they were serious contenders in this field of 11 entries with their precise circles and speed control. With an overall score of 209, they took the lead.
While Sharon watched and waited as the competition attempted to beat her score, she recalled the path that led them to Kreuth, Germany. “I was doing an internship at Nedpoint Quarter Horses in Oklahoma when I found him,” she said, “or when he found me. His owner had died, and his last wish was that the stallion go to a youth rider.” Commander Riminic, sired by Reminic AQHA and out of Miss Royal Command, was imported to Europe in September 2008. Sharon has been riding the 12-year-old stallion for about a year. After a rocky start, the team went to work with trainer Jurgen Pouls and they started to click. “He’s been going quite well,” she said. They have been showing in smaller NRHA shows and Sharon is at the top of her Rookie division. “He’s a stud but he doesn’t even act like one. You only have to warm up for five or ten minutes or he won’t go--which is hard for me. He knows how to go. If something goes wrong, it’s me--not him. He’s got a great character.” But for the European Championships, Sharon was on her own--her trainer couldn’t make it. “Jurgen gave me instructions on how to go and how to ride him,” she said. “I thought we did okay--but we can do better.” But after all five judges placed her first, there was no doubt who was the European Champion. Sharon will get a second chance on Tuesday in the Amateur reining. “He’s a great horse to teach me,” she said. “I’m happy I got him.”
